People living in urban areas spend most of  their life in buildings. Hence buildings consume a significant portion of the electricity produced, water and contribute to the carbon dioxide emission. By optimally designing a building, the resources used by it can be reduced significantly.  Most governments recognize this and offer tax and other incentives for building which follow green building practices

Green building practices cover the various aspects of  building design and construction.  These include

1. Construction material used

2. Building design , so that sunlight and natural ventilation is used to the extent possible, minimizing energy used.

3. Use of renewable energy sources like solar energy and wind power

4. Recycling and reuse of  waste including water and paper.
